Arsenal beat Southampton to stay in hunt for Champions League

Arsenal kept their Champions League hopes alive as they edged past Southampton 2-0 to move one point ahead of Manchester United into fifth place; four points off fourth-placed Liverpool with a game in hand.

In a tense first half, Southampton had the best chance as Petr Cech had to be at his best to tip Manolo Gabbiadini's shot onto the bar.

Arsenal were dealt a blow as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain limped off, to be replaced by Hector Bellerin, and Aaron Ramsey dragged a shot wide when he should have done better.

The second half saw the Gunners start better and Ramsey's effort was deflected behind by Danny Welbeck early on.

And the pressure told as Mesut Ozil slipped Alexis Sanchez through, the Chilean turned past two defenders and then slipped the ball neatly under goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

James Ward-Prowse failed to get a header on target as Saints searched for an equaliser and Arsenal doubled their lead as Ramsey found substitute Olivier Giroud to head home as the Gunners picked up a massive three points in the chase for fourth place.
